Good news, bad news & not so bad news

The Good News:
Mom will probably get to come home soon.  Don't know the date yet.  She's doing better with the stairs - yay!  I guess her medical team has to have a meeting and then she'll know when.

The Bad News:
She had her apointment with the kidney doctor and was told her kidneys sustained too much damage, therefore she will be on dialysis permanently.  Not the news we wanted to hear.

The Not So Bad News:
Her doctor said she is a candidate for a procedure where they implant a port somewhere under the skin and she can do dialysis at home, while she sleeps.  So, she won't have to spend 3 days a week at a dialysis facility.  She'll be able to do it at home.

So, that's the news for now.

mom takes a fieldtrip

Mom was able to attend the Draper temple dedication at the stake center.  She was looking forward to going and being able to see the inside of a church building again and many familiar loving faces.

I just spoke with dad.  He said that they both really enjoyed the dedication and mom enjoyed being "out of her cell."  He said that there were a few folks from the ward that came over to say hi to them.  I know mom loved it.

After the dedication they took mom home for lunch.  Dad said she really had a hard time with the stairs in the garage.  Randy had to really support her going down into the garage.  She's got a lot of work to do to get her legs and knees strong enough to handle the stairs.

They're back at the care center now.  I'm sure mom is wiped out.  I'm glad she was able to get out and attend the dedication.

Sophie and I haven't seen her much this week.  We're both fighting terrible colds, and we definitely do not want to share with her.
Mom told me that she had climbed 4 stairs in physical therapy on Friday and I could tell she was very proud of herself.  I'm sure she's feeling a bit discouraged from the "trial run" at home, but I know she'll work even harder now since she's had a teaser of being home, even if it was just for a visit.

Keep her in your prayers.
Thank you!

Mom seems to be doing about the same. She's still having the "intestinal troubles" - but they think it's due to the antibiotics she is on. She's frustrated with dad because he brings in things he thinks she should try to fix the problem. He Mr. Fix-it and that's just who he is....but it's driving mom bonkers. I know he just wants to help. I can see the frustration from both sides. Oy...

Mom is still going to dialysis three times a week. She says by the time she gets back and has lunch she is exhausted....and then here comes the physical terrorists. I think she's still doing well, it just is going to take quite a while to get back her strength.

She is very grateful for all of you who visit, call or send notes to her. It still helps to lift her spirits.

Sorry, it's been a while.  Mom is still plugging along.  She is working hard at building her strength and walking with her walker.  She is still going to dialysis.  Her kidneys are working better and her legs look good (meaning they're not swollen).  I don't know how much longer she'll have to do dialysis.  She's been suffering from a bout of "intestinal distress" - which is going around the care center.  She said she was feeling a bit better.  Good news.

Anyone who would like to add to this blog, send me an email.  It would be helpful.  I'm still not feeling well, and don't want to get around mom.  I don't want to pass anything else to her.

Thank you

Thank you Uncle Cliff & Aunt Betty for posting your feelings and observations of your visit today with mom.

I have been ill due to severe back pain and lack of sleep the past few weeks and haven't been able to visit mom at all. I hated not seeing her. I love her so much and want to make sure she has all that she needs to be happy, comfortable and positive, so she can get better and come home soon. I always want to make sure she has at least one visit from someone each day, even if it has to be me (& Sophie).

Sophie and I did get to visit her this evening. She still seemed to be in good spirits. She was putting me to work writing birthday and thank you cards for her. She's still thinking of others with all that she's dealing with. What a woman!

She continually tells me how grateful she is to everyone who visits or calls her, or just drops a note in the mail. That really helps buoy her up and keeps her going.

I'm grateful to all of you, too, for your love, prayers and thoughtfulness for mom. She really is such a special lady, and I love her!

Thank you!!!!

Here are a few photos from recent visitors:

You can't really tell, but Sophie has bejewelled her face. She's such a dolly.

Making herself at home....err, actually she's just warming up grandma's bed for her.

Visiting with Sharon and Sophie (last week)

Visiting G'ma at the hospital. They thought it was sooo cool to get to wear "doctors masks."

Saturday visit (February 21, 2009)

A visit today showed Jean to be in reasonably upbeat spirits.  Her foot edema is now such that she can get her shoes and foot brace on.  Initially it was much harder for her to walk with shoes as apposed to stocking feet as it required her to lift her left foot more.  However, she is slowly getting stronger and is able to "walk a lot."  Her worst ambulation problem now is rising from the toilet.  This may be helped with a toilet seat elevator that is commercially available.  Kidney dialysis continues and a further planned study may allow a better prediction of when that need will end.

It was pleasing to see Jean's typical buoyant spirit and will to overcome.  A substantial work effort remains to allow her to achieve the level of self care necessary to return home.  The love and support of family and friends is important at this pivotal time.

Jean has always been a wonderful sister and friend.  The continuing level of visits by family and friends attests to the esteem in which she is held.  We add our expression of deep love and respect for she and Bob and appreciate our friendship with them.

With love,

Cliff & Betty Harman

Saw mom this afternoon. She had just come back from PT. She said she was exhausted. She was too tired to eat dinner in the dining room. The brought her dinner in to her.

Dad hurt his back helping mom move in her bed. I think he could use a few extra prayers to help him out.

Thanks
